Dolphins – those special marine mammals – are the subject of this photo special. All the pictures here are of wild dolphins, some of the almost forty species that are found worldwide. They are a recent evolutionary adaptation, having first appeared on this ark in space around ten million years ago. Intelligent, curious and fearless, they embody many of the qualities that we admire and to which we aspire. Welcome to the world of the dolphin - free, physical and wild.

Dumbo famously featured pink elephants, but did you know that there was a pink dolphin? In their wild habitat of the Amazon River they are quite happy to meet and greet those willing to forego a few fish for the pleasure of their company.

Also known as the Amazon River Dolphin this friendly and gregarious species is found not only in the river from which it gets one of its names.

It can also be seen in the Orinoco and the Araguaia Rivers – in fact its range covers six South American countries.

Dolphins: The World's Best Surfers

You can find the world’s best surfers at Dolphin Cove near Esperance in West Australia but don’t expect to see any surf boards – the clue is in the name.

This remarkable footage captured by Jennene and Dave Riggs who have been wildlife filmmakers since 1998 shows a pod of dolphins simply enjoying themselves with what nature provides. If we can’t have lives spent quite in the same pursuit of happiness then at least we can share the pleasure of watching our dolphin friends having fun. Who was it who said we were the most intelligent species on the planet?

Byron Beholds Kona: Dolphins and Mantas Swim to Poetry

This is a rather lovely piece by Michael Maes – and the first in series which he calls Poetry eMotion. It combines the profound emotion that poetry can engender with the motion of dolphins and mantas in Kona, Hawaii. The contrast of the curious dolphins, soaring through the sea in the daytime to the roving, feeding mantas at night together with So We'll Go No More a Roving by Lord Byron is, quite simply, sublime.

Mark Peters and friends encountered an unexpected surprise while albacore fishing off the coast of Santa Cruz, California –a pod of Pacific White Sided Dolphins which playfully hitched a ride behind their fishing boat. The graceful ease with which the dolphins glide through the water is simply amazing. Fortunately, Mr Peters had his camera on him and was able to catch this magical footage of something which most of us will never experience.

This is a beautifully made piece of film by Sarosh Jacob. It captures life beneath the surface in a number of places throughout the world, starting with Bonaire and a mesmerizing school of fish. Next we go on to the Cayman Islands and its beautiful coral alongside the Kittiwake shipwreck. From there it is on to Socorro, Mexico and we get to see dolphins and whale sharks: next to Iceland and the Silfra Rift and lagoon. Finally we go to the Philippines, and witness clownfish anemone, schooling jacks, turtle and Palau to see the amazing sight that is Jellyfish Lake.

It is an almost bewildering array of animals and habitats. It is also for those of you who have emailed in specifically asking for more marine life and environments to be featured on Ark in Space. You’re quite right – over 70% of the planet is covered by water!
