Cats In Sinks

Monday, 22 August 2022

The old proverb is true. In a cat's eye, everything belongs to cats. That includes, well, everything - including your sink. What has a certain use for us may be interpreted as useful in an altogether different way by our feline friends.  So it is with that useful household item, the sink.  Cats love them - but for very different reasons to us.  Prepared to be bemused and amused at the same time.  The words are related - we need no better excuse. So, because they can so can we - welcome to the world of cats in sinks.

They may always be quite certain what they are doing there themselves, as Phoebe the gorgeous Persian here seems to be indicating with that rather sullen but perplexed look on her face.  Perhaps that old Moroccan saying is true, after all - you cannot teach an old cat to dance.

Heterochromia – The Eyes Have It

Monday, 30 May 2022

There are a number of reasons why animals can have one eye of one color and the second of another, but the term for the most likely cause is heterochromia.  It is more often than not to do with melanin. This is a pigment that is found almost everywhere in nature (spiders being a notable exception) and it dictates such things are skin and eye color.

Manul – the Cat that Time Forgot

Friday, 4 June 2021

Have you ever wanted to take a trip through time to see what animals looked like millions of years ago? When it comes to cats there is little or no need.  This beautiful specimen is a Manul, otherwise known as Pallas’s Cat.  About twelve million years ago it was one of the first two modern cats to evolve and it hasn’t changed since. The other species, Martelli’s Cat, is extinct so what you are looking at here is a unique window in to the past of modern cats.

Cat on the Menu

Sunday, 31 January 2021

Sometimes you should take things a little more literally!  This charming picture was taken outside of the Dolphin Restaurant in Sultanahmet, Istanbul.  We would not dream of giving places which would serve up cat for lunch or dinner a molecule of the oxygen of publicity! Yet, for at least one day there really was cat on the menu at the Dolphin Restaurant!

Why Cats Like Boxes So Much

Saturday, 14 July 2018

Cats like to hide.  That is because they employ something called crypsis to keep themselves safe and sound.  A cryptic animal, like a cat, uses its anatomy and behavior to hide from anything which might predate them. It is different from camouflage as this can also be employed by predators and is used by many animals, including big cats, to more effectively attack prey.  A house cat uses its natural flexibility to hide in places a predator might not consider. A box is just that. Inside it, a cat feels invisible, and that is exactly how he likes to feel.

Perhaps these exceptions don't quite prove the rule, but let's go with it.

Fight!

Saturday, 10 December 2016

Sometimes it is simply play, at others it is in deadly earnest.  Yet when animals fight there is something that draws us to watch despite the potential fatal outcome.  Perhaps it appears to something visceral and basic in our instincts - or perhaps we just like to watch a good old fashioned tooth and claw fight.

The Scottish Fold – Owl Cat Extraordinaire

Sunday, 20 December 2015

The Scottish Fold is something of a special breed of cat.  Seeing one for the first time you are drawn to its round facial features and, in the back of your mind, a thought nags you that something seems to be missing. Then you realize – it’s all about the ears.

Sanctuary of 700

Thursday, 28 May 2015

Cats, cats, everywhere!  If you feel overwhelmed by two or three cats paying you attention then perhaps you should look away now!  Cat House on the Kings in California is currently home to 700 cats and kittens which, for a number of reasons, have lost their own place of safety and need somewhere to stay before they are adopted.

It’s quite a sight as the place has a no-cage policy which means that the cats are free to wander everywhere which, being cats, of course they do!

Run by the redoubtable Lynea Lattanzio, The Cat House began life over two decades ago and despite initial problems with permission to provide shelter to so many cats, has gone from strength to strength ever since.  Ms Lattanzio’s ultimate aim is, frankly, to go out of business.  Through educating the public she wants the need for this kind of place to become a thing of the past.  Eleanor Abernathy, the crazy cat lady from The Simpsons she ain’t.

Elizabeth Nelson, a graduating film student at Northern Arizona University, visited this fascinating place and created this lovely short documentary.  Although The Cat House does do tours, most of you reading this will be far away from California. So, take a guided tour around the facility and meet the staff, including Ms Lattanzio who tells us how the whole thing started.

The word sanctuary doesn’t fully or properly describe this place.  It’s a veritable Shangri-La for cats.  You can also learn a lot more about it at its website, The Cat House on the Kings.

Got Milk?

Saturday, 10 November 2012

These fours little guys were in a cat shelter and didn’t know quite know what to expect when they received some human visitors. What they did know, of course, is how to look endearing!  It seems that the one with the red collar had already found a home.  Let’s hope that the rest of this cute quartet found somewhere to go too!

Feline Photobombs

Saturday, 19 November 2011

Cats. If you are owned by one or more of them you will already have discovered that if someone is having their photograph taken, then it just isn’t a photograph without the cat being in it as well. After all, if you are going to own humans you may as well share with the world. Yet even when it is simply a picture of your lounge, garden or bedroom (or someone or something getting more attention than it deserves) it just isn’t the same without the cat being in it too. At least that’s what they seem to think! This isn’t simple photobombing – this is ownership.

That which is best eaten cold...
So, how do you go about getting your revenge? Easy. Simply turn the tables and capture kitty when he or she is least expecting it. Don't worry - there will be no love lost, but watch your back in the future!

Dusty the Klepto Cat

Friday, 8 July 2011

Meet Dusty. He is becoming known as Klepto Cat and is a 5-year-old male Siamese who has stolen in the region of 600 bits and pieces over the last three years, according to guardian Jean Chu of San Mateo, California.

Among the many items the 15-pound cat has stolen from his neighbors include shoes, towels, leg warmers, a mask, gloves, a stuffed animal, bathing suits, a bra, and men's briefs.

Dusty makes his heists in the dead of night. His unusual exploits have earned him fame with spots on Animal Planet, Late Night With David Letterman, and ABC-TV news in the Bay Area.

On June 25, 2011, Dusty, Jean Chu and Chu's daughter Kayla met a crowd of Dusty's fans at an animal adopt-a-thon sponsored by the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) in San Mateo. Dusty was adopted from PHS as a kitten.

With a donation to the shelter, visitors got to take home their very own Dusty souvenir — one of the more than 100 towels he's stolen throughout the years. Chu embroidered DUSTY Klepto Kitty on each, along with a pawprint.

Cat in a Box

Tuesday, 10 May 2011

This may not be the highest quality of videos, but nevertheless I found it very amusing. Who can say what goes on in the head of the average cat – let alone one like this.

This cat likes to play with boxes – or more accurately I should say that this cat likes to be in boxes.

It may be a case of go figure, but if it’s happy and it’s not hurting anyone – who can argue? It does, after all, take all types to make a world.

Home Sweet Home

Sunday, 28 March 2010

It's a tough life, being a cat sometimes.  Just that need to be alone sometimes gets the better of you and when those humans really annoy you, then anywhere will do.  Just as long as it's nice and quiet - we don't really care!  Hey, you with the camera, clear off!  Can't you see I just want a little of my own space?

A Day in the Life of Romeo the Cat

Tuesday, 23 March 2010

This is charming.  Romeo is a cat and, like other cats he likes to spend his days doing, well, cat like things.  Here, his human companion Daniel Lowe, records a day in his life.  Romeo is without doubt the star of this particlular show but he has one or two co-stars in for the ride too.

This is just a lovely short to sit back, watch and relax with - it doesn't pretend to be anything else.  However, is is a great snapshot of a day in the life of one very cool cat!

Cat Etiquette 101 - Posture

Wednesday, 17 March 2010

Correct posture is everything - a single paw out of place and you can, very quickly, look rather louche (or just down right trashy).  This cat is called Sofia, which is a classy name indeed.  However, this feline friend lets the side down badly by plonking herself down in a position that is just a little less than ladylike.  A how not to do it, indeed!  The cat will feature large in the Ark In Space, so it is quite right that one should be the subject of our very first proper post.  We hope in the future to bring you many more excellent pictures of cats - and perhaps some classier ones too!
